There’s a possibility that James died (or divorced) -- there’s a 1930 census record for an Ethel Welch (38) married to Verner V. Welch in Melvindale, with “roomer” Amanda Avery and a long list of younger Avery children. But while Ethel’s birth state is Indiana (as it is in the 1920 census), the birth states of Amanda’s parents are not Michigan. All Avery children are listed with father born in Ohio (and mother in Indiana).

1920 James (34) and wife Ethel (28) are living at 395 Myrtle St., Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan with daughter Amanda (6) and an extended family--mother, sister, brother-in-law, nephew and nieces. 440
