In 1894, Sam was living in NYC. He petitioned for naturalization in NYC Court of Common Pleas.

1920 census says Sam first entered the US in 1887. His first recorded visit to the US is in 1889 with Tom & Hannah Wootton . He returned to England some time before 1900, married and had a family. He returned to the US in 1911 and went back to England and his family (wife Mary & three children) joined him in 1914
