CENSUS INFORMATION
1841 Cary “Atkin” (30) is living in Leicester Borough, Leicestershire with daughter Agnes (8) and Elizabeth Brown (65) [probably mother].
1701851-1861 see entry for James Wootton, second husband.
1871 A “Clara” Wootton (61) is living at 40 Kensington Cross, Lambeth, London with sons Thomas (25) and John B. (23) and daughter Elizabeth (27). Visiting is Charlotte Selby (70).
171 Name is transcribed Wootten.
NOTES
Name is generally spelled Cary or Carey, depending on which document you look at. Maiden name is Brown, first husband’s surname was Atkin or Atkins (which is her surname on the marriage certificate).
There is a good chance that her mother was named Elizabeth, based on 1841 census. There is an LDS Bishops Transcript record for the birth/christening of a “Cara Brown” to Thomas Brown and Elizabeth in 1809 (BATCH # C036882) and a submission of christening of Cara Brown to Thomas Brown and Elizabeth Hall by an LDS member. This isn’t firm enough to include in the formal record.
CENSUS INFORMATION
1841 there is a James Wootton, 20, bricklayer, living on Welford Rd., in Leicester, St. Mary’s parish. Since he didn’t mary Carey until Nov 1841, this is likely to be our James as a bachelor.
1671851 census, James Wootton (34) is living at 22 East St., Leister, St. Margaret’s parish, with wife Cary (36), step-daughter Agnes (18) (Cary’s daughter by an earlier marriage), daughters Elizabeth (8), Anna Maria (6) and sons Thomas Cooper(4) and John Brown Wootton (2). Occupation is listed as “builder”
1681861 census, James (50), wife Cary (46) and children Annie (16), Thomas (14) and John (12) are living in Westminster St. John the Evangelist, Middlesex, (now part of London?). Birthplace now just Leicester, children’s names have been simplified (Annie rather than Anna Maria, no middle names for sons, and ages of two sons have been transposed. Visiting are Thomas Barnes (31), his wife Agnes (27) and daughter E..en (8 months). It’s likely that this is Agnes Atkins, Carey’s daughter by her first marriage. Marriage is not in FreeBMD.
169a cursory search in later census records doesn’t find James Wootton. A Clara Wootton, with daughter Elizabeth (too young) and sons John B. and Thomas are living in Lambeth).
NOTES
Listed in transcribed Wymeswold parish register as “James s/o Thomas & Sarah Wotton (sic) mason” Since this is the only Thomas & Sarah Wootton/Wotton couple in Wymeswold we have evidence of, it’s likely in the line.
