Youth Services Concentration

This concentration meets the interests of students planning public library careers with a focus on youth populations. In addition to the concentrations outlined above, students may choose to specialize in Healthcare Informatics.  Coursework related to library and information work in legal, scientific, medical and business settings, as well as studies in computerized information systems are among the many elective options available.

Graduates of the Youth Services Concentration:

  • Assist children and teens with the use and evaluation of information resources
  • Collaborate with teachers and parents to support the developmental and educational needs of children and teens
  • Organize and manage libraries
  • Develop web pages and portals to make resources available to youth and their caregivers
  • Create information environments that are supportive of youths' diverse backgrounds
  • Partner with community organizations that serve children and teens
  • Provide leadership in the field
  • Advocate for improved library programs and services for children and teens
  • Act as change agents, leaders, and resource guides
  • Actively participate in professional organizations
